I heard a story last week on the news that made me laugh… It was the typical Murphy’s Law moment – apparently a man bought a lottery ticket and won. That is the desired outcome when you purchase a ticket, but that is not the funny part of this story… the part that caught my attention was that this particular winner was on probation and was not allowed to gamble or play the lottery! So imagine winning a million dollar jackpot and then having to give it back! Then after returning the money, serving time because you violated your probation! What a deal! It sounds exactly like something that might happen to me!
I am glad that God isn’t like that though. Isn’t it great that we can win the lottery with Him and if we screw up we don’t lose it all? I love the story of the son that left home with his inheritance and blew it all on parties and women, but when he came to the very end, his dad still welcomed him back! His dad was watching every day for his return, and when it happened, he through a big party! I am not saying that we should intentionally go make messes of our lives knowing that God will make everything better, but knowing that I can make mistakes and still be forgiven for them is such a relief!
I hate messing up; I hate admitting I make mistakes. I am such a hypocrite sometimes because I don’t like to look bad so I often try to cover up my messes… I messed up this weekend with my wife and kids, and was so stubborn admitting fault it was ridiculous! I get really defensive and obstinate. Yet we all make messes. Thank God that I can still be a part of His family; Thank God that He waits by the door looking for me to return, to give me a big hug and welcome me back in when I screw up… Thank God I don’t have to worry about losing anything but a little pride – He let me win the lottery with Him and He doesn’t take it away when I mess up! Thank God!
