We woke up this morning to about 2 inches of snow. It was about 60 degrees yesterday so we were all a little surprised to see it coming down like crazy. Our kids (all 4) go to a charter school, and there are certain dress code requirements that are in place. They all have the “approved” sweatshirts, but this morning it seems they are all either dirty or missing. It was a little tense around our house before they all were off to school. We have worked really hard at teaching them to be independent and responsible kids, I am always trying to teach them life principles, and often they get lectured. I don’t know about you, but my kids hate lectures, they probably only get about 20% of the information from a lecture. (20% hmm, that sounds familiar)
We have done a lot of on the job training with our kids, because a few years ago I learned something that will transform the way you equip those around you to do a job… I don’t know if there is a name for this system, or where it developed, but it works. Following these 5 easy steps you are off to doing a great job of equipping future leaders, both in your home and in the marketplace, and since it is Leadership Friday, you get them for free!
#1 I do it
Usually we get stuck in this one and wind up doing and doing, but no one else knows what or how, and the information stops with us.
#2 I do it and you are with me
It is easy to bring someone along and show them what you do and how, go slow and explain why you do it the way you do as you go.
#3 You do it and I am with you
I get to watch you do it and give you feedback as to how it is done, it may be exactly the same way as I did it, it may be a little different, as long as the goal is being met, that is okay!
#4 You do it (but don’t stop there)
You are on your own, sailing right along, but if you don’t watch out the same thing that could potentially happen under #1 will happen again with someone else, only one person knows how to do it, and the system can stall out… be sure to challenge the person currently doing it to start the process again with another…
leading to step #5.
#5 You do it and someone is with you
See equipping future leaders is simple, and you will have your kids doing laundry, making school lunches, doing dishes, and learning great life skills that they can take with them into their futures! But it doesn’t stop there…
This is really a business principle, but I love it for what it does with our kids, our number one priority as a parent is to help them become successful. Skipping these steps with them can be crippling when they eventually leave your home for the real world! This works incredibly well in the market place too, especially #5, because you only have so many kids to pass the knowledge and skills on to. It helps build relationships, answer questions, build confidence and prepare people for success. Try it out, start at home!
As it turns out I found out where I got this information, it was from a John Maxwell lecture. I am not sure if these are original with him, or if he was borrowing them from someone else, but I love Maxwell’s stuff… he makes the complex simple and teaches anyone and everyone to be a better leader!
This is great. It’s easy, it’s simnple, and I really believe it will work.
oh, i like to start and stop with “i don’t want to do it anymore so you’re gonna do it, do you understand?”
i’m pretty sure that’s maxwell, too.
I love simple too Michael… Transplanting and I go way back, I am sure there was a time or two that I have used her approach as well…
I love transplanting approach to be followed by “because i am the mom thats why”
That is my type of leadership!
