My New Friend

I made a new friend last night at the Rescue Mission.  He is in his early twenties with a young family.  He came to the point in his life where he recognized that to be around for his family long term, he had to get help.  He was a coke addict and yesterday was his first day in the program.  The Springs Rescue Mission does two things, it helps meet people’s immediate needs, feeding them dinner, providing clothing, education and sometimes jobs, but it also runs a 12 month recovery program.  Guys enroll or are sentenced to the program and spend the next year in classes designed to help them get back on their feet again.  Many of those in the program have been homeless at some point, many of them self enroll in the program.

My new friend has a long road in front of him, but he has already made such a courageous step in admitting he has a problem and finding help to overcome it.  Yesterday was his first day, meeting the guys he would spend the next year with, leaving his family to enroll in the program, finding out where his room is, learning the ropes of the program, it is a lot for a first day.  He looked overwhelmed, but if he can make it through the next few days, he can make it a year.

I love going to the Rescue Mission because it is such a great place to see lives being changed!
